The Gambia Ferry Services (GFS) announced on Thursday that the Kunta Kinteh ferry will undergo some maintenance.

The maintenance works will involve underwater scrapping, welding, painting, and installation of new engines and propulsion.

“The works are expected to last for six weeks with effect from 6th March 2024. In the meantime, Kanilai will be deployed to provide limited services along the Banjul and Barra routes,”GFS said on Thursday.

Over the past weeks, the ferries along the Banjul-Barra routehave been experiencing breakdowns, causing frustration to users.

According to a statement from the GFS, the maintenance of Kunta Kunta is geared towards providing a safer and more reliable ferry service to the people using the Banjul-Barra route.

The GFS encouraged travelers, and truck operators, in particular, to use the Senegambia Bridge during the maintenance and it expressed apologies to the public “for any inconveniences this may cause”.
