AG Expresses Gambia’s Intention to Establish Jammeh-Era Crimes Court

The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dawda A. Jallow, has expressed the Gambia’s intention to establish a court to try crimes committed during former President Yahya Jammeh’s 22-year rule. 

Justice Minister Jallow and a delegation of experts from Banjul were last Tuesday in Abuja, Nigeria as The Gambia seeks cooperation with ECOWAS on judicial reforms. The minister and accompanying experts were received by the President of the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Dr. Omar Alieu Touray.

The Abuja visit formalizes the Gambia’s request for ECOWAS support for the implementation of the judicial reform component of the TRRC recommendations.

In a meeting attended by the President of the Court of Justice of ECOWAS, the Honourable Judge Edward Amoako Asante, and the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Dr. Abdel-Fatau Musah, Dr. Touray reaffirmed that ECOWAS will always be with the Gambia as well as other member States in actions and programs for the benefit of citizens and nurturing democratic health.
