The community of Changali Langkady in Sandu, Upper River Region has expressed appreciation to the FAO and WFP for providing it with a 5ha vegetable garden.

The objective of the vegetable garden is to boost food and nutrition security in the community as well as household income.

Speaking to The Voice in Changali Langkady, the VDC Chairman Ma-Foday Jawla said the construction of the garden has significantly increased vegetable production and improved the economic status of youths and women.

He pointed out that the garden has enabled youths to stay in rural Gambia and make attractive income.

The VDC chair appealed to FAO and WFP to help provide, among others, a waiting shed and toilets at the garden.

Beneficiary Musukoi Sillah enumerated the benefits of onion growing to the women of Changali but lamented that marketing remained a challenge.

She called on the government and onion importers to patronize them.
