The Banjul Magistrates’ Court, presided over by Principal Magistrate Muhammed Krubally, has convicted and sentenced a Mile II inmate to serve five more years in jail months before he was due for release.
Abdoulie Manneh served four years at Mile II but a few months before the completion of his jail term, he was sentenced to serve five more years there for stabbing a fellow inmate with a screwdriver.
Manneh on Monday admitted guilt for stabbing a fellow prisoner Sheikh Omar Jeng on 12 December 2023, as Jeng performed ablution.
The prosecution, led by 1st Class 7048 A.Y Bojang, said Jeng became unconscious after the stabbing but later regained consciousness only to notice that blood was oozing from his mouth and nostrils. The prosecution said Manneh was found with the screwdriver that he used against Sheikh Omar and he [Manneh] identified it as the weapon that he used against his victim when it was tendered in evidence.
The tearful Manneh appealed to the court to show him clemency, claiming that he committed the offense under the influence of Satan just months away from his release.
However, Magistrate Krubally was unconvinced, stressing that Manneh should have considered the jail term he was serving rather than committing a crime that could prolong his stay behind bars.
The Principal Magistrate recommended skills training opportunities for Manneh so he could be productive in life after his prison sentence.
