Jammeh Should Accept Title of Former President Barrow Tells Foni

President Adama Barrow has asserted that Yahya Jammehshould accept the title of a former President to enable him to live in dignity.

“We want the entire Foni to unite as one family and work with the government because you produced a President for 22 years and the entire Gambia followed him. Before him, it was President Jawara, who ruled for 30 years and his rule came to an end. President Jawara became a former president and died in dignity. So, what we want is for Jammeh to also accept that his title is a former President,” President Barrow emphasized during his Wednesday meeting at Somita village on the second leg of his Meet-The-People tour.

“You know, if he accepts that he is a former President, the entire burden on his head will be eased. As a result, he can have peace and live in dignity. By so doing, people can honor him and I think, he should accept that today,” he added.

The Gambian leader said if former President Jammeh cannot be satisfied with the honor of ruling The Gambia for 22 years, nothing else can satisfy him.

“If Allah made you fortunate to rule for 22 years, that’s a huge honor. If that does not satisfy you, nothing else will satisfy you,” Mr. Barrow stated.

He explained that he is resigned to the fact that his next title will be former President.

“I, for one, accept that the new title I will have will be former President and I will accept it. I pray we all witness that but I promise Gambians that if I finish work, no one will employ me again,” Barrow said. He added: “I can do social work to assist Gambians and I will use the title and position to bring about something positive for Gambians. The reason for that is that to be singled out for President is a debt that cannot be fully paid. I believe that even if I pave a road with diamonds, I cannot pay that debt. So, I committed myself to work for Gambians till death comes.”
