GFD Condemns ‘Discrimination’ Against Disabled Nurse

The Gambia Federation of the Disabled (GFD) has condemned what it called discrimination against a disabled nurse.

Ms. Ndey Fatou Njie is said to be the Gambia’s first and only nurse with a hard-of-hearing issue. She was reportedly subjected to different forms of discrimination at her duty stations in FajiKunda and Sukuta health centers.

The GFD not only condemned the “discrimination” against her but have recommended to the health ministry to create for her a work environment that will be both inclusive and accommodating.

“Discrimination against disabled persons not only violates their basic human rights but also undermines the principles of diversity, inclusion, and equality that are essential for fostering a thriving and innovative work environment,” GFD stated. “It is crucial for organizations to recognize the immense value that disabled employees bring to the table and to create an inclusive culture that embraces diversity in all its forms,” it added.

The GFD recommended to the Ministry of Health to immediately create an inclusive workplace for Ndey Fatou Njieto practice her profession with dignity and respect as any other employee.

It also recommended that employers ensure disabled employees have access to reasonable accommodation that enables them to effectively perform their duties by providing them with flexible work arrangements.

The federation called for the enforcement of anti-discrimination laws that explicitly prohibit discrimination based on disability.

“These laws should be communicated to all employees and enforced consistently,” it added.

It also called on all Ministries, Organizations, and parastatals to take proactive measures to create an environment where every individual feels valued, respected and empowered.
