Residents of Jalamba in Brikama, West Coast Region (WCR) have appealed for support from the Brikama Area Council amid the rainy season that’s gradually taking away their community.

Scores of people within that surrounding area are presently living in a desperate situation they said floods now taking over everywhere despite that some of the house owners finding it difficult to amend or repair their linking roofs.

Reaching out to The Voice, Maimuna Sawo, a resident of Jalamba narrated the difficulties she faced with her family when it rains and the sleepless nights she goes through with her children.

“When it starts raining, I have to wake them all up because is not safe the house is very old and it is very risky for one to be sleeping while it’s raining. The roof is very bad while the floods make the house and the veranda wet and muddy. We are facing a lot of difficulties here and we need financial assistance,’’ she said.

Another resident, Alfousainou Jallow narrated that his family suffers during the rainy season, noting sometimes they go to sleep without expecting the rain but late at night when it starts to rain they become scared.

‘’Our roofs are very bad and we are very scared to sleep in the house because anytime heavy rain and wind comes it takes away the roof of the house and the room will be filled up with water. Even if it didn’t take your roof it can take another someone else and dump it on yours,” he explained.

He therefore called on the Brikama Area Council to help the people in Jalamba as most of them are suffering and the rain still has a long way to go.

On a similar note, Mariama Sonko added that she faces a lot of challenges with her family, noting that their house is very bad and the ceilings are not good and when every place is flooded it makes them feel so uncomfortable because it can collapse the fences, or the building itself.

‘’We can’t sleep on our beds because all the chairs and bed will be wet. Instead, we spread mats on the floor and sit until the rain stops, our veranda is not good and the rain also causes some damage. We badly need financial support or any kind of support from the Area Council.”
