INTERNATIONAL NEWS | Jacob Mendy receives his first Gambia call-up

Wrexham AFC are delighted to share that Jacob Mendy has received his first international call-up for Gambia, ahead of their African Cup of Nations Qualifier in Egypt.

The Scorpions take on South Sudan in their penultimate group game, at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium on June 14.

They currently sit level on six points with Congo, only to be bettered on goals scored leaving them third in Group G.

Mendy joined the Red Dragons last summer and played an integral role in the record-breaking title campaign, making 32 appearances across all competitions.

Ahead of the qualifier, Mendy explained he was honoured to receive his first call-up for The Scorpions.

He said: “I’m over the moon and very proud, but the fact my friends and family are proud makes me even happier.

“It means a lot to me because three or four years ago I’d never have imagined playing for my country, and it just shows how working hard can give you the rewards.

“Getting called up for my country is one of the highest honours I could have achieved.

“It shows I am on the right path, and I don’t want it to just be one call up, I want it to be many more for the future.”

The energetic wing-back scored four times in the 2022/23 campaign, with his most important coming against Notts County, in a barnstorming victory at the Racecourse Ground.

After bringing him to the Club, Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson expressed his delight at the news.

He said: “I’m really pleased for Jacob that he’s received his first international call-up. It’s a great honour for him and his family.

“We look forward to seeing him in action later this month in Egypt.”
