Omar B.J Touray, Deputy Mayor of Banjul City Council (BAC) doubling as Councilor for the Crab Island Ward has on Saturday, April 1st, 2023, distributed bags of sugar to residents of six communities within the ward as part of his office’s annual Ramadan sugar distribution.
Speaking at the occasion held at James Senegal, the Deputy Mayor of BCC, disclosed that the gesture is an annual activity that his office engages in for the past years and deemed it fitting to continue the gesture. Adding that thirty (30) bags of 50kgs sugar have been secured that will be equally distributed among the communities of Crab Island.
According to him, James Senegal, Hardington, Police Barracks, Box-Bar, London Corner, Wesley, and Thomas Streets all in Crab Island Ward will be the recipients of the Ramadan sugar.
He added that the gesture is not only for UDP supporters but for all residents of Crab Island Ward irrespective of any form of political or religious affiliation.
He refuted suggestions that this gesture is politically connected as the nation heads into the Local Government Councilorship election slated for the 15th of this month, arguing that such initiatives including women and youth empowerment, sports development, and community and social works have been the yardstick of his success in politics.
“This gesture has been going on since I assumed office and I see no reason why I should not continue to reach out to the residents of Crab Island. The sugar that has been distributed is not only for my supporters it is for all the people of the ward irrespective of any form of affiliation,” Omar B.J Touray outlined.
He added: “This gesture precedes many other interventions that my office delivered for the people of the ward.
“For the first time, we have a daily collection of waste from our community, my office has also secure funding for a women’s garden at Crab Island School, so I can say I have delivered and the people of the ward will massively vote for me for continuity.”
Hon Modou Lamin Bah, National Assembly Member (NAM), Banjul North, Bintu Jaiteh, Councilor Campama Ward, Marie Njie, and Marie Senghore among others all praised the Deputy Mayor of Banjul for the kind gestures.
They both called on the electorates of the ward to give their fullest support to the Deputy Mayor of BCC, highlighting that this is the first time residents of the ward started witnessing the importance of the office of the councilor, assuring that such accomplishments will be doubled once electorates vote for continuity of the office.
In a related development, the Deputy Mayor of BCC also unveiled the Crab Island Women’s Garden, a pilot project bankrolled by the European Union (EU) designed to engage the women of the ward in horticulture and gardening thus raising their economic livelihoods.
