Bakary Camara, former National Assembly member for Kiang central, who also doubles as the head of delegation for African Parliamentary Union (APU) said in the absence of Mutual legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Bill 2020, it will be difficult for Government to implement the recommendation of the Truth Reconciliation and Reparation Commission.
Speaking to The Voice, Hon Camara said a lot of bills during the fifth legislature are hanging so the sixth legislature should speed up and work on those crucial bills that will be of importance to the Gambians.
‘’I keenly follow the current parliament proceedings but if you look , their expectations are high but we are expecting much from them even though we have the aim to push those bills but some could not make it to be elected again. We hope and think that the sixth legislature picks from where we stopped and make sure that those bills are treated well.”
However, he added this current legislature has a lot of opportunities unlike the fifth legislature so they should leave no stone untouched which effectively enhances them in their work.
“In my view their work is a bit slow compared with the fifth legislature. They should focus more on committee work which is important. Plenary work is very minimal compared to committee work because bills are well treated at the committee level.”
