Karamba Touray Contract Ends, Replaced by Modou Ceesay

Karamba Touray, Auditor General of the Gambia has been replaced by Modou Ceesay two weeks ahead of the end of his one-year contract barely two months after making sterling revelations of corruption allegations mostly involving government officials including the office of the President.

Touray, who retired last year, was offered a one-year contract by the government, and this ended on 30 November, official sources told The Voice and no official communique has been released by the government on the circumstances leading to his departure.  Sources further disclosed that he was on official assignment out of the country.

A source closed to his office has informed this medium that the former Auditor General has since been replaced by Modou Ceesay Director General of Internal Audit under the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, noting that the erstwhile Auditor General is currently on an official mission to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia with Ibrahima Drammeh – Director of Ministries and Departments Modou Ceesay, NAO.

Binta Touray, Spokesperson, National Audit Office (NAO) confirmed the release of AG Karamba Touray and the coming of AG Modou Ceesay, disclosing that the former Auditor General’s contract will be expiring on 25th November 2022, after securing a one-year extension with the government last year.

She dismissed allegations of witch-hunting against the former AG for making vicious explosive corruption revelations against the Presidency and senior government officials in its Covid-19 Audit Report, arguing that AG Karamba Touray’s retirement has been long overdue and has been granted an extension of one year that is supposed to elapse on 25th November.

However, the Ministry of Finance and Economics Affairs has on Wednesday 17th November 2022, announced the appointment of Modou Ceesay to the office of the Audit General effective 16th November 2022. It says Mr. Ceesay is a finance, audit & risk management professional. Until he was appointed AG, he was the Chief Audit Executive for the gov’t of The Gambia, providing leadership to the internal audit, risk management, and wider governance issues. “Mr. Ceesay has over 11 years of experience working in the finance departments, accounting, financial reporting, internal audit, risk management, business improvement, and governance fields. The management and staff of the Ministry wish him success in his new assignment,” Ministry Finance and Economics Affairs wrote on its Facebook page.
