Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe of Banjul has requested the contractor of Banjul rehabilitation project, Gai Construction Company, to hand over a copy of the project’s documents to the Banjul City Council.
“I expressed gratitude to the central government for the swift response to the council’s plea to support the affected areas and also close collaboration with Banjul City Council for a proper and lasting solution to the current situation that has befallen my people.
“However, I strongly expressed concerns on how the Banjul City Council has been continuously side-lined from the Banjul rehabilitation project. I also emphasized the need for the council’s involvement in the project as the council will eventually be the custodians of the project upon completion,” she said.
“I strongly lamented the importance of the project document which is the blueprint and asked the contractor to hand over a copy to the Banjul City Council. I further ask the contractor to facilitate the waste management equipment which is a component of the contract. Consequently, His Excellency President Barrow welcomed my concerns and immediately called on the contractor to work closely with the Banjul City Council,” she stated.
She said she also visited the affected families at Tobacco Road, Tali Dawda, London Corner, Lasso Wharf, and Hopkinson, (Banjul South).
“I also visited St. Augustine’s Senior Secondary School, where most of the affected families in Banjul are currently hosted. The visit also availed the Council staff and myself to assess first-hand the extent of the damage caused by the flash flood.
“I engaged residents, commiserated, and assured them of the council’s unwavering commitment to finding a lasting solution to the floods. I was accompanied by the National Assembly member for Banjul North, Honourable Modou Lamin B. Bah, and several councillors and senior council staff,’ she disclosed.
