WOMEN IT IS TIME FOR CHANGE

Written by CYNTHIA MAHONEY

It is high time for a gender switch. When a woman knows what her mission is on earth, then there is no case for gender equality. Because of ignorance women have not taken their rightful position, up till date.

God gave women the spiritual power to illuminate the earth, this may come as a surprise to many but the first substantiate form created after God created light, were beings of female form. They were perfect beings with supreme spiritual powers and strong intuitive perception.

Woman can only will, and things come to pass because she has the creative powers but she does not know it. A woman’s most sacred vocation lies in her spirituality. Closely connected to nature that is why we hear the term mother nature, attributed uniquely to womanhood.

Women have a distinctive and unique role they play in society. They have a completely different lifestyle of leadership. They are trustworthy, good planners and a positive influence both at the family level and the community level. She is highly productive in every sense of the word and has the ability to create and meet the needs of her household.

Women are to wake up to the challenges of the 21st century in leadership positions. It is the time to forgo women differences and with one global voice claim the rights for equal gender parity.

Women have made phenomenal improvement in breaking barriers that have been uniquely male dominated. Notwithstanding, men are still considered in some quarters, as head of the home, where serious decisions of the family (children) fall within the purview of both parents, especially the mother.

Democratic changes and social reforms at a global level have offered women meaningful profession and opportunities to occupy top political positions in the international and national decision-making bodies

Women values and priorities still put them at a distinct disadvantage in political competitions with men. Although there have been lots of improvement, one can still observe competition at an individual level. Women should get more involved in politics in The Gambia especially as parliamentarians, so that they will be able to defend the interest of the underprivileged, disadvantaged and marginalized in society.

Women in the rural areas need to feel safe from men, who when seriously challenged by women who are empowered, become violent and abusive. It is a serious crime of oppression against women and young adults. In view of traditional and cultural norms, it takes an unusual amount of courage to press charges because of the stigma.

From the cultural point of view, early societies were more matriarchal in most activities. It is common knowledge that the mystery of a woman is connected to her biological creative nature, that men tend to envy, from a psychological point of view; since they lack the capacity to create life but spend their earnings creating ‘state’ arts and science, religious creeds etc..

Overtime, all these problems damaged the relationship between the sexes, which resulted in the bondage and fears men experienced when deprived of their marital rights and obligations.
