Scorpion’s striker Assan Ceesay has guided his Swiss topflight side FC Zurich to winning their first Swiss Super League title after 13 years following a 2-0 win at closest challengers FC Basel on Sunday.

The Gambian international Assan Ceesay scored the first goal of the match with a looping header five minutes before the break.

With 72 points, and just four matches remaining before the end of the season, Zurich, who last won the championship in 2009, have an incontestable 16-point lead.

The last time Zurich won a title was in the domestic cup of the 2017/18 season and had another Gambian in their ranks in Pa Modou Jagne who played the whole match in a 2-1 final win over Young Boys of Bern.

Assan Ceesay alias Torres joined them from Lugano the following season.

The former Gamtel striker is currently the second leading scorer in the division with 18 goals, just four behind United States attacker Jordan Pefok.

The Banjul-born player, Ceesay said “We are the Champions. Alhamdulillah. #Trust the process100,” he posted on social media.

He appeared in the vast majority of Zurich’s matches this season, playing in 31 of the 32 games, starting 29 of them, accumulating 2,166 minutes in total.
