Data Privacy launched

Jokolabb, an organizing promoting cyber security through awareness campaigns, has launched data privacy that seeks to raise awareness, promote privacy and data protection best practices, which, currently observed in the United States, Canada and 47 other European countries.

The Data Privacy programme was held at Jokolabb Bakau.

Speaking at the launching, Sanusi Drammeh, principal Information Communication and Technology officer from Ministry of Information and Communication said: “Data privacy day was an educational initiative premised on raising awareness among businesses and users about the importance of protecting the privacy of their personal information online.”

“Going through history, the educational approach later broadened in subsequent years to include consumers and businesses. Data Privacy Day promotes events and activities that encourage the development of technologies and systems in promoting individual control over personally identifiable information (PLLS), enforce compliance with privacy laws and regulations to create dialogues among stakeholders interested in advancing data protection and privacy,” he said

According to him, the international celebration offers much opposition for collaboration among government, industry, academia education industry nonprofits, civil society’s privacy professionals and educators. The convention for the protection of individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data was opened for signature by the Council of Europe on 28 January 1981.

“This convention is regularly updated in order to reflect new legal challenges caused by technological advancement and the convention is Cybercrime which is the Budapest Convention is also protecting the integrity of Data systems and thus of privacy in cyberspace. It is also protected by article 8 of European Convention on Human Rights and was initiated by the Council of Europe held in 2007 as the European Data protection Day, two years on 26th January 2009 the United House of Representatives passed Senate Revolution 25 also recognizing 28 January 2009 as National Data Privacy Day,” he explained.

He said the Ministry of Information and Communication Infrastructure in 2019 formulated the Data Protection and Privacy Policy.
