Honorable Seedy Njie, deputy spokesman for the ruling National People’s Party has said The Gambia’s Constitution has disqualified the United Democratic Party’s firebrand politician, Honorable Momodou Sabally from running for parliamentary position .
Mr Njie’s comment comes days after Honorable Sabally announced his intention to contest for national assembly position in Busumbala Constituency under the ticket of United Democratic Party.
“Section 90 (1) e of the 1997 Constitution of the republic of The Gambia disqualified Momodou Sabally from contesting as Member of the National Assembly,” Seedy Njie.
However, Honorable Sabally earlier announced that: “I have formally submitted a letter of intent to our relevant party officials in my bid to stand for the UDP in the upcoming National Assembly Election for the Busumbala Constituency.”
“If selected by my party I hope to pull off a landslide victory (Inshaa Allah) and serve to attain, among other purposes: protection and promotion of the sovereignty of the Republic improvement of the welfare of the residents of Busumbala Constituency fight for responsible and responsive fiscal policy so that our tax payers get their money’s worth in deliverables promulgation and promotion of real youth and women’s empowerment legislature supporting environmental protection and cultural authentic,” he said.
Meanwhile, both Honorables Sabally and Njie did work with the exiled former president Yahya Jammeh. Honorable Momodou Sabally served as Jammeh’s presidential affairs minister and secretary general while Honorable Seedy Njie was appointed by Jammeh as a nominated member to national assembly and briefly served a minister of information and communication during the 2016 political impasse.
The Gambians will head back to the polls for the national assembly elections in April to elect new lawmakers who will steer their affairs at the House of representative for the next five years.
