President Adama Barrow wins December 4 election, opposition cries foul

President Adama Barrow has won the December 4, 2021 presidential election to serve a second term in office, the electoral commission has announced, a result his rivals – United Democratic Party leader, Lawyer Ousainu Darbo, Honorable Mamma Kandeh of the Gambia Democratic Congress, and independent candidate Mr Essa Faal rejected on Sunday.

In the presidential race, President Adama Barrow received 457,519 of the total vote, beating opposition leader and former vice president Ousainu Darboe who got 238,253 votes, the electoral commission said.

Honorable Mamma Kandeh of the Gambia Democratic Congress came third with 105,902 votes, Honorable Halifa Sallah of People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) scored 32,435 of the total votes casted to occupy fourth position.

The two newcomers, Mr Essa Mbye Faal came fifth with 17,206 votes while Abdoulie Ebrima Jammeh of National Unity Party (NUP) took last position with 8,252 of the total votes casted in the 2021 presidential.

The announcement was greeted with chanting and dancing by a crowd of supporters But the opposition has called the election “flawed.”

“Overwhelming evidence available makes it impossible for us to accept this spurious and hurried conclusion,” said a member of parliament for the United Democratic Party name withheld.

“We intend to take decisive and concrete steps, with the presidential results, to overturn this brazen and shameless attack on our democracy.”

Up to press time President-elect His Excellency Adama Barrow was yet to make his victory speech as the final result was released approximately 9:30pm local time.
