NPP reacts to Kijera’s resignation

The National People’s Party has downplayed the resignation of Alagie Kijera, a prominent NPP supporter in the diaspora. Kijera, an NPP supporter and founder of the Barrow Fans Club, quit the party after confirmation that the party is forming an alliance with the APRC party.

But reacting to his resignation, the NPP administrative secretary Mambanyick Njie said Mr Kijera has every right to resign but he (Kijera) based his decision on the reported NPP/APRC MoU circulated on social media, he would have made an error of judgment.

“That document is completely false. It is fabricated by people who don’t want the NPP/APRC alliance,” he said.

Also commenting on the resignation Ansumana B Tunkara, a strong supporter of the NPP in the diaspora, said: “The NPP are open to working with Gambians from all backgrounds and political affiliations.”

He said the resignation of Mr Kijera was always on the negative fringes of the NPP.

“There are Gambians who are only suited to supporting the opposition. They relish in negativity, criticism, and fault-finding and such people cannot be part of any government of the day. It is such people who are dominant in the UDP,” he said.

On the tangential issue of the NPP/APRC alliance, Tunkara said: “What the critics fear is not that it is illegal or wrong; they fear for their political gains in the December forthcoming elections. It is hypocritical to say a registered political party in the Gambia should not join hands with another party to contest elections.

“Parties like the UDP have former Jammeh strongmen in their party structures and speak for them. Momodou Sabally is duped Commando by Ousainou Darboe. Sabally, a one-time Jammeh protégé and a man who did whatever Jammeh wants? What moral authority do those UDP supporters have to question a political alliance between NPP and APRC?”

The President, he added, “Will respect the judicial processes; he will never interfere in the judiciary, the work of the national assembly, and other arms of government. So let the opposition cry, but they should stop making up false stories about our relationship with APRC. The NPP will not only join forces with APRC but other formidable politicians as well”
