Two people have been killed by ECOMIG vehicle with number plate, 27 GA 51 and injured four other around the Mariama Kunda Junction around the late hours of 1am to 2am on Sunday, 5th September, 2021.

But the ECOMIG mission in The Gambia has sent their condolences and announced launching an investigation into the issue with the Gambia Police Force.

“The ECOWAS mission in the Gambia deeply regrets the road traffic accident that occurred near Mariama Kunda junction, in the early hours of September 5, 2021 involving a Ghanaian contingency ECOMIG vehicle and a tricycle. An account of preliminary investigation conducted, according to the driver of the ECOMIG vehicle, he stopped and came out of the vehicle to check on the persons in the tricycle so as to help them, however, a mob came to the scene and a gentleman who felt the accident was not his fault told him to flee the scene because the mob would kill him. Therefore, he quickly drove off back to Paradise Estate in Old Yundum and the mob followed him in other vehicles, realizing he was being trailed; the ECOMIG driver left the vehicle in a nearby house at Paradise Estate and hid from the mob,” a statement from the ECOMIG said.

It added that the ECOMIG is cooperating with the Mobile Traffic Headquarters of the Gambia police force to investigate the accident.

“We also wish to inform the general public that contrary to media reports, the unfortunate incident occurred when the tricycle is trying to avert a pothole and allegedly ran into the ECOMIG vehicle from the left direction. ECOMIG expresses its sincere condolences to the bereaved family of the deceased and wish that the Almighty God grants them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss, and also the injured people speedy recovery. The ECOMIG mission in the country reminds Gambians their commitment to ensure peace and security in The Gambia and West Africa in general,”
