According  to a statement from the party head office the “Unveils Party’s Secretary General/Standard-Bearer Ahead of 4th December 2021, Presidential Election in The Gambia Party head office, Abuko, Kanifing Municipality, 23rd August 2021 – The National Executive Committee of the National Unity Party (NUP) under the stewardship of National Chairperson Mr Ousman Jammeh (former Minister of Foreign Affairs & Gambians Abroad and one-time Secretary General and Head of the Civil Service, Office of the President) wishes to announce the appointment of Mr Abdoulie Ebrima Jammeh as NUP’s Secretary General and Standard-Bearer with effect from 23rd August 2021.

“Consequently, and in accordance with the party’s organs, Mr Abdoulie Ebrima Jammeh shall be the NUP’s Presidential candidate for the 4th December, 2021, presidential election. This development came about following a vigorous and thorough search for a competent and passionate presidential candidate in recent months”.

“Mr Abdoulie Ebrima Jammeh, now standard-bearer for the NUP, was the Director General of The Gambia Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) for over 9 years and banks a combined unblemished 35 years of distinguished public service career with an inspirational reputation for excellence in leadership and administration. It could be recalled that the National Unity Party was established in August of 2018 and got registered with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on 5th October 2020. A cardinal philosophy of the party’s founders was to build a people’s movement with a shared vision and interest in national development to create a merit-based government.

“To set the standards, a resolution was adopted at inception that none of the founders shall vie for the positions of Party Chairpersonship or Presidential candidacy. This philosophy of the party projects and portrays that the true membership of the body rests entirely on the collective entity of its bona fide members and not on any one individual. The NUP governance framework will be guided by democratic values and principles which will be vigorously upheld and practised both at the organisational level of the party and supported and sustained at the national level of government.

“The two-term limit is an upheld value of the NUP. The standard-bearer of the Party will serve for no more than two consecutive terms both at the helm of the party and as a President of The Gambia when elected. The need to unite all the people of The Gambia, irrespective of political, racial, religious, and tribal affiliations, the need to curb the rise in corruption, and the need to improve the standard of living for all Gambians is the cornerstone of the NUP socio-economic development agenda. The NUP development programme lays emphasis on decentralisation of power to local level, enhancing the business and investment environment of The Gambia to attract both domestic and foreign direct investment that will support the generation of income, employment opportunities, particularly for Gambian youth, and to provide good quality and affordable health care and education system,” it concluded.
