Car crash in Italy leaves 2 Gambian dead

Two Gambian migrants who are identified as Lamin Ceesay and Modou S Barry have died in a car accident after their Ford Fiesta crashed into a Renault van in the Italian provisional city of Sicily.

The pair died along with two other African migrants, one from Senegal and the other one from Guinea Bissau. They all died on the spot of the fatal accident.

“This are the four Brothers who died and two of them are Gambian Lamin Ceesay and Modou S Barry, one of them is from Guinea-Bissau and the other one is a Senegalese they’re all living in Ragusa Comiso Sicily, they involve in a car accident this evening and they all died at the spot May their souls rest in peace amen,” Ebrima Drammeh, a Gambian in Italy told The Voice.

This mishap is one known cause of death Gambian migrants’ face in Italy as dozens are reported to have died but the causes to their deaths remain unknown.

Tens of hundreds of Gambians live in Italy, many of whom travelled through perilous Mediterranean Sea for greener pasture. But many of the migrants died in tragic circumstances, as dozens of others live in a desperate poverty condition.

A survey from The Gambia Labour Department showed 95% of Gambians migrate to Europe for lack of jobs.
