Brufut ‘Mansa Garden’ has been hit by shortage of water as the women gardeners appealed to the government through the Ministry of Agriculture to come to their support.
The women gardener in unison disclosed that their crops and vegetables are infected with diseases because they have no pesticide.
Speaking to The Voice on a visit to their garden Brufut, Fatou Darboe one of the gardeners disclosed among their challenges saying “we are facing shortage of water and chemical.”
She said that the chemicals are very expensive to obtain likewise to fungicide the crop, adding that they don’t have assistance to helping them access to this chemical.
According to her, they are faced with lots of problem and before the Ministry of Agriculture used to give the garden support by providing them with seedling but that has become inadequate.
She urged the government to help them in finding solutions to the problem they are facing in the garden.
Magiki Bojang, also a gardener lamented that the main problem affecting them in the garden is shortage of water and chemicals citing that four of their wells has dilapidated due to the heavy rainfall last year.
“This shortage of water has been the main problem since the establishment of the garden. The garden is depending on only one borehole and there is no enough solar panel that can assist the borehole to operate effectively,” she said.
She confirmed that the Ministry of Agriculture is aware of the problems while she urged the Ministry to help them with enough solar panel, chemicals and storage facilities, she said.
Another gardener, Bikin Faye, Santa Jatta, Binta Bojang and Binta Manneh all shared similar comments on the challenges of the and urged the government (Ministry of Agriculture) to help them solve his problem.
