By Adama Makasuba

Leader of the Citizens’ Alliance has said holding elections with the 1997 constitution will defeat and betray hopes and aspirations of Gambians.

Dr Ismaila Ceesay who is also the head of political science Deen at University of The Gambia comments come days after six Gambian political leaders including himself flew to the Nigeria capital, Abuja, to hold talks with Dr Goodluck Jonathan, who serves as the chief-mediator in deadlock of the draft constitution. The talks however failed.

“A new constitution will guarantee a path towards democratic consolidation. Holding elections with the 1997 constitution will defeat the purpose of the transition and betray the hopes and aspirations of our people,” Dr Ceesay wrote on his twitter.

He urged for mutual work among Gambians in order for the nation to register their hopes and aspirations, adding “Let’s work together to forge a new democratic trajectory.”

Meanwhile, he has been nominated for the Award of Eminent Peace Ambassador by the International Association of World Peace Advocates.

He said: “Greatly honoured to be nominated for the Award of Eminent Peace Ambassador by the International Association of World Peace Advocates. I look forward to working as a global citizen to promote peace around the world.”
