Gambians worry over rip-off prices on foodstuff

Gambians have expressed concerns over continuous price hike on foodstuff amid coronavirus pandemic as dozens of businesses have been closed and hundreds of jobs lost.

The nation has seen recent increase on prices of basic commodities like foodstuff, triggering public concern as a handful numbers of people of the Gambia live below the World Bank’s poverty line.

They are urging the President Barrow government to help find solution to the situation now. If prices of goods, according to people, reduce the government will have a good name and those that cannot buy the goods because of the high price will now be able to buy it as well.

Sainey Jawla said: “we heard that the government is going to reduce the price of commodities. The barrow government is a disappointment because they said if they came to power, they will make sure standard of living will become easier for every citizen which they fail to do as a government.”

Dembo Sumbudu said: “we are tired of the difficult being of the people in this country. There are some food items that when costly, survival becomes a problem much especially the poor people.

On her own Fatou Touray believes that government is not care in the issue of the increase in price of commodities.

Ndumbeh Touray said it is very difficult to survive in this country now because of the increase in price.

She argued that despite the harps on price reduction during campaign still there is nothing the prices of goods.
