John Charles, chairman Association of Non-Governmental Organization (TANGO) has called for peace among Gambians as December 2021 Presidential election gets close.
The Gambians will go to the polls on December 4 to elect a president who will lead the nation for the next five years.
Mr. Njie who spoke to The Voice exclusively said despite a political difference, he urged Gambians to endeavor and nurture peace in the country and desist from inciting violence.
“Gambians should be sensible enough not to allow politics to divide them despite their political differences. Gambians should know there is life after election and there is need to comport ourselves in such a way that after election we will be able to associate with our neighbors,” he said.
“Why would I fight my neighbor just for the sake of politics at the end of the day we are all Gambians. If we fight and this country burns down it is us that will be calling for help so why don’t we be peaceful. We should move beyond sentimental politics were our politics is based on tribe, religion or background,” he added.
However, he lashed out at politicians saying they are ‘selfish’ but urged Gambians not to fall for their tactics.
“As the election approaches it is the responsibility of every citizen to think about the country first and not to leave this country in the hands of the politicians if not, they will destroy it. The civil society should act as watchdogs to ensure that all political parties’ follow the rules governing the election and also IEC to conduct election fairly,” he said.
He said that the law must deal with people who violate the rules of IEC during the campaign period whether it is the ruling party or opposition parties, adding that Gambians should stand together and fight for the best interest of the country and also be ready to register their voter card.
