MP for Basse, Muhammed Magassy has informed that Gambia College annex in Basse is on the verge of shutting down operation because there is few permanent staff to run the affairs of the school.

He was speaking during the presentation of Gambia College annual activity report to select committee on Education, saying: “At the point in time Basse College is about to be close down that even the coordinator at the college clearly stated that if there is no competent lecturers the college is going to be closed down.”

“Even the principal knows what am saying. The point in time is not the part time lecturers who are going to run that college. There are only two permanent staffs the other one is a coordinator while other are part time,” he added.

In his respond, Abubacarr Jallow Principal of Gambia College said: “with regard to Basse we had some people that were appointed, but for one reason or the other all of them decline to go to Basse, as some said the salary that they are receiving at the higher school are more than what we are offering and some of them are not only teaching in one school.”

According to him, this has become an issue because they responded before   the opening of the term to get some staff to employ as full time. But unfortunately all of them did not turn up except one Nigerian with masters that show up.

“The management has been using some of the staffs, some at the regional office while some in the high schools and currently we have three full time staffs as lecturer and some as part time lecturers. What we decided is that in coming January is that those in Brikama College will be posted to go and spend a term until when people decide to live in Basse on their own,” he said.
