Honorable Rohey Malick Lowe, Mayor of Banjul on Thursday provided 100,000 face masks for the needy and less privilege people in The Gambia to enable them protect themselves from the deadly corona virus.

The gesture was held at the Banjul City Council.

Commenting on the launching of the Operation 100,000 face masks, Mayor Rohey Malick Lowe called on everyone in the country and Diaspora to join her and take up this challenge.

She said face masks play a key role in slowing down the transmission of the virus and lot of many needy people are out there and they cannot afford the buying of one face mask weekly.

“For those of you asking whether council can lockdown the city, we cannot because Banjul is the capital and the seat of Central government,” she told the residents

She said it is more important for central government to put all its efforts in creating a healthy environment for the inhabitants of the capital city but that has been neglected.

According to her people are dying on a daily basis not only from Covid-19 but from cancer, diabetes, hypertension and other related diseases, and hospitals are overwhelmed with patients and the situation continues to be very bleak.

However, she made it clear that the government has not in any way contributed to their efforts at Council level.
