The commonwealth established on 11 December 1931 with 54 member states mostly former territories of British Empire and it’s headed by her majesty Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain.

The purpose and the interest of the voluntary commonwealth is centred on international cooperation and to advance economic, social development and human right between and in member states

It’s a tradition that every second Monday of March is set aside to commemorate the existence of this organisation usually in a fashionable style by school going children specifically the Nursery and Lower Basic School going children.

This year’s celebrations focused around the theme “Delivering common future” different schools in Gambia came up with the activities such as Drama and cultural displays depicting the diverse cultures of the member countries and importantly Climate change which requires collective participation of members with the ultimate aim to mitigate effect of climate change.

Speaking to a school principal of Mr Bakary Saidy of Sunrise Educational Establishment in Bakoteh said they are happy to be associated with the commonwealth memory because it’s a moment to reflect on how countries were colonised and eventually marched to attain independence as well as to appreciate the life style of others within commonwealth nations.

Schools such as Bakoteh schools, Ndows and Schools within serrekunda took part in the celebrations of this.
