Scores of Gambians in Chinese coronavirus-hit city of Wuhan have called for national prayers from Gambians against the deadly virus as they said evacuation is an option.
Their call comes at a time when most residents in Wuhan are kept in closed doors where they are allowed to go out only once a week to do shopping.
More than twenty-four Gambian students pursuing different fields of studies among others living in Wuhan, a city that is described as the epicenter of coronavirus.
An anonymous Gambian student who spoke to Voice Newspaper disclosed that most of the Gambians currently residing in Wuhan are all indoors and only have the chance to go out from their houses once a week in other to stock-up their fridges with food and other items, revealing that loitering in the streets of Wuhan is strictly prohibited and can lead to one’s arrest and detention.
“We are very concern with the status quo here, it seems the disease is not easing as expected, at least more than two or three thousand people are getting infected daily but the death toll is not as high as some media houses are portraying especially the western media. Right now most of us can only go out once in a week because of our own safety and the strict rules enforced by the Chinese Security because the disease is too deadly but all we are asking Gambians to do is to offer prayers for us, to know that their brothers and sisters are in fact staying in Wuhan City in China, that is the only way out,” the source revealed.
He explained that most Gambians living in Wuhan are trapped in a quagmire, a situation that is beyond imagination with very little option other than prayers for their protection and defeat of the disease, stressing that evacuation and repatriation to Gambia is the last option most Gambian living in Wuhan has because of fear of lack of health facility in The Gambia in an event one of them contracted the virus.
“What we are calling for is prayers because evacuation or repatriation will not help in this situation, suppose one of us contracted the virus and comes with it to the country that is something else and this is why evacuation and repatriation is not in our option for now, all we calling for is prayers,” another disparate Gambian student in Wuhan explained to The Voice Newspaper.
He disclosed that Gambia Government has donated four hundred and fifty dollars ($450) to each Gambian Student in Wuhan that they used to procure foodstuffs for themselves, adding that currently they are no longer attending lectures creating more problem than answers.
