GCCA+ cleanses Barra Coastal line and dump site to boost environmental protection

National Environment Agency and partners in environmental protection on Saturday held cleansing exercise in Barra to help clean the coastal areas and dump site to ensure proper environmental management.

The activity was attended by Navy and Fire Rescue services, Nuimi National Park Management and Village Development Committee of Barra.

The Coordinator of Global Climate Resilience Coastal and Marine Zone GCCA+ Project at National Environment Management Agency has underscored the importance the commitment of the project on the implementation on the recommendation of Management and Strategy of Global Climate Change Alliance, citing national climate change policy for the protection of coastal and marine resources.

Haruna Jobe said the  cleansing exercise at Barra coastal zone and dumping site to promote better environmental management and practices. He noted that NEA has instituted an integrated coastal zone management to ensure effective utilization of marine resources and restore biodiversity ecosystems.

Fafanding Kinteh NEA Operation Officer noted that waste management and cleansing the coastal zone remain a concern and call on stakeholders including the community to be vigilant protecting the coastal area. The effective management waste along the coastal would promote the health of people’s.

Lamin Komma Senior Program Officer Coastal and Marine Environment unit at NEA noted that his office attaches great important of working with communities to ensure proper management and disposal of waste within Barra and it environment. He therefore call on institutions, market vendors including fishermen and transporters to ensure regular cleaning of environment.

Alagie Faye alkalo of Barra thanks NEA for their support and noted that more efforts would be put in place to ensure monthly cleansing of Barra, noting more waste is generated on daily basis as a result of it strategic location.

He disclosed that the VDC is working hard to have vehicle to support council collection of waste and therefore launch for support from philanthropists and environmental organizations.
