IEC Confirms Registration of Gambia for All Party (GFA)

The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has confirmed the registration of the Gambia for All (GFA) Party as the newest registered political party in the country barely three days after the registration of the National People’s Party (NPP) own by President Adama Barrow.

In a statement, the IEC confirmed that GFA has fulfilled all the conditions outlined in the electoral act by the Party and thus registered the party on January 2, 2020.

“The Independent Electoral Commission hereby wishes to notify the general public that having met the requirements for registration under section 105 of the Elections Act (as amended), a new party; Gambia For All, has this 2nd day of January, 2020 been duly registered as a bona fide political party,” said IEC in a statement made available to The Voice.

Former Gambian finance minister and vice president, Bakary Bunja Darboe is GAP secretary general and party leader. The symbol for the party is ‘swarm of bees’ with Light Blue as the party colour, noting that Tesito, Justice and Discipline is the party’s motto.

Bakary Bunja Darboe, lovingly called BB Darboe is a veteran politician and a season civil servant who held various offices and assignments during the first and second republic rising to the ranks   vice President, finance minister, education minister and Gambian ambassador to Senegal.

Darboe was in exile after falling apart with the Armed Forces Provisional Ruling Council (AFPRC) for allegations linking him to 11th November, 1994 abortive coup. Darboe returned to the country in later part 2017 after the downing of the APRC regime of Yahya Jammeh, his efforts to join his former party, People’s Progressive Party failed to pay dividend against the backdrop of power struggle between him and former Mayoral Candidate, Papa Njie.

In same development, the Independent Electoral Commission on 31st December, 2019 accepted and endorsed the registration of National People’s Party (NPP) under the leadership of Gambian President Adama Barrow.
