GSIC Not Serving Gambian Muslims Interest-Islamic Scholar

 By Lamin B. Darboe

One of the founding members of the Gambia Supreme Islamic Council (GSIC) in the Lower River Region (LRR) informed Majmouatu Rawdatul Majaalis (MRM) members that the current members of the council are not serving the interest of the country’s Muslim Ummah.

Musa Fatty a native of Kolior village in Kiang East District was speaking MRM’s  country-wide tour at Soma main mosque which was jam-pack with Muslim worshippers from all corners of the region.

“Sheriff Muhammed Nano Hydara is the new SIC President through the wise decision of our Muslim elders who made the selection on October 12th during MRM National Unity Conference held at Semega Janneh Memorial Hall.

Fatty a renowned Islamic scholar in the region recalled his mind that the food and non-food items normally distributed during the late (Soriba Jabbie’s) tenure do reach to majlis sects in the country.

Adding that after late Alhaji Soriba Jabbie’s tenure, majlis sects in the country especially those in the provincial Gambia were sideline by the council members thus the benefits do only goes to the politicians.

He described the leadership of the Imam Touray as a rubber stamp who totally deviated the council’s benefits to undeserving people in the country instead of to the majlis sects and Karantas.

The MRM Regional coordinator for LLR, Imam Kubra Kanteh assured Rawdatul Majaalis members of LRR’s support to them as their main mission is to empower the work our forefathers.

“What we are doing is not about politics but instead it is about continuing the good work of our forefathers which is to propagate and promote the Islamic region in the country,” Imam Kanteh explained.

He called on Gambian Muslims in the country not to have two minds about the selection process of Sheriff Muhammed Nano Hydara as the new SIC president of The Gambia.

The secretary general of the MRM, Foday Mahmud Touray called on Government especially the Ministry responsible for Religious Affairs and Presidential Adviser to the President on Religious Matters to intervene in the current Islamic row in the country.
