Gambian Chief Justice Hassan Bubacar Jallow has been nominated by the ECOWAS group of ambassadors in Addis Ababa to represent the sub-region on the African Union Panel of Eminent Africans to oversee the pre-selection of candidates for the senior leadership of the African Union Commission.

A statement made available to The Voice Saturday said the candidates to be pre-selected would compete for the positions of the next chairperson; deputy chairperson; and commissioners of the African Union Commission in elections to be held in 2021 when the terms of the current office holders elapse.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad of the Republic of The Gambia is pleased to inform the general public that Honourable Hassan Bubacar Jallow, Chief Justice of The Gambia, has been nominated by the ECOWAS Group of Ambassadors in Addis Ababa, to represent the West Africa region in the African Union Panel of Eminent Africans to oversee the pre-selection of the candidates of the senior leadership of the African Union Commission,” the statement said.

Other panel members are also individuals with distinguished career track records and international standings from the Central, East, North and South Regions of the African Union.

They will also coordinate all the technical processes that will lead to the pre-selection of the best candidates to be appointed by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.
