The Public Utilities and Regulatory Authority (PURA) organized a daylong forum for broadcasting sector, in order to discuss sectoral related issues with a view to take the necessary approaches needs for enhancing sectoral growth.

The event yesterday  Wednesday t Metzy Reaidence Hotel in Kololi, aims to provide the guidelines for a collective approaches to promote an efficient and effective broadcasting sector that supports The Gambia pursuits for sustainable socio-economic and political advancement.

 

Ansumana Sanneh, Director General of PURA said PURA as a sector is responsible for licensing broadcasting but has a number of objectives rages across both commercial and technical considerations. 

He said  key  amongst includes the preservation and promotion of consumer interests, and encouraging the greatest extent possible and integration of local content and ensuring interference free signal distribution at all technical level with new advancement in broadcasting .

According to him, the authority is cognisant of the involving nature of The Gambia society and media, which requires media regulation to be light as possible with freedom of expression, as adapted to the type of media being regulated.

He urged all the participants to form a key part in directing a future regulatory and policy direction within the radio broadcasting space.

Alieu Ngum, Chairman PURA Board of Director also said  the    forum is meant  to foster a close collaboration and information sharing between PURA and stakeholders within the sector in a bid to inspired greater understanding of individual roles, and bring about an awaken perspective issues that impact society as it relates to broadcasting.

He added that PURA understand the significance of the broadcasting sector only as a mandate but also, appreciated the challenges inherent in the sensitivity of information in broadcasting.

“PURA has recognized that lots of works is required for the analysis of complex information and distilled in a simplified manner for your esteem listeners for better understanding, “he said.

Amie Njie, Permanet Secretary (MoICI) also said their Ministry would effectively continue to foster a sound regulatory policy framework that will encourage media inclusion and place a premium on fairness, objectivity, proper research, balance reporting and the promotion of local culture content.
