Salaries yet to Address Real Cost of Living- Jobe

Minister of Trade, Regional Integration and Employment, Bai Lamin Jobe, has observed that recent salary raise by President Adama Barrow is welcomed, but many voices are deploring the fact that salaries are yet to be based on the real cost of living.

Addressing workers on May Day, he assured workers that efforts are being made by government with a view to provide the necessary support for the development of the human capital.

 “These efforts include reform of the Civil Service and the introduction of performance contracts for the State-owned enterprises for enhanced service delivery,” he added.

According to him, this year’s theme is centred on “Building Workers’ Power, Change the Rules.”

He pointed out that the theme called for concerted efforts to bring to force workers’ aspirations geared towards the realisation of our collective dreams.

Jobe revealed that Ministry of Trade in collaboration with Gambia Bureau of Statistics (GBOS) conducted Gambia labour force survey 2018.

Minister Youths and Sports, Hadrammeh Sidibeh, claimed “the government of The Gambia recognizes that the country’s most critical resource is its people whom are not only the drivers of its people but the pinnacle of development agenda.”

According to him, “efforts are made to provide the necessary support for the development of the human capital which include reform of civil service, laws and the introduction of performance contract for the state own enterprises to enhance service delivery purposes.”

Ebrima Garba Cham, secretary general of Gambia Workers Union urged government “to put in place a tripartite task force that will constantly monitor the implementation of the workers with a view to addressing issues challenging the workers.”

He assured the support of The Gambia Workers Union to the work force, adding “we will response to the emerging issues within your work industries urgently in the best interest of the industrial fee.”

He called on Gambian workers to inculcate the spirit of industrial peace and harmony at their work place to realize their objectives and potential to the fullest.

He also urged Gambian workers to adhere to the principle and practice of this tenant in accordance with international work standard, adding “you should   embrace peace and love in their various work places.”
