Hon. Yahya Sanyang, leader for the larger faction of the National Convention Party (NCP) has urged President Adama Barrow to retract his recent pronouncement of Majanko Samusa as the leader of the NCP political party, describing it as an error.
However, Hon. Sanyang who is widely regarded as the leader and secretary general of the National Convention Party made this remark in a press conference on Sunday held at the party’s bureau at Wellingara.
“Recently, President Adama Barrow welcomes some supporters believed to have come from Kombo South at the State House. In that meeting he [President Barrow] introduced some of the people including one of our [NCP] members called Majanko Samusa. Thus, President Barrow introduced Mr. Samusa as the leader and secretary general of the NCP,” he said.
He then added: “I think this was an error because the President made the pronouncement after the Congress has separately done whereby the two factions, Mr. Samusa was elected by his faction and ours [Hon. Sanyang’s faction] also elected me as the party leader and secretary general.”
Sanyang who has served UN, Action Aid The Gambia and Future In Our Hands, further pointed out that President Barrow’s pronouncement on the NCP’s leadership by introducing Majanko Samusa as the leader of the party is an error, therefore, saying that his faction deem it necessary to clear the air on the President’s error on introducing Mr. Samusa as the party leader.
Hon. Sanyang pronounced that Mr. Samusa is not the leader of the NCP, adding he [Hon. Sanyang] was also elected by NCP militants across the country in a democratic and transparent manner compare to Mr. Samusa who was elected by few people. “Our faction is large and we have higher representative in the party,” he added.
Hon. Sanyang reiterated that the head of state pronouncement on the NCP leadership will not be taken lightly because he is a public figure, saying that people have started accepting Mr. Samusa of being the party leader due to the President’s pronouncement on the NCP political status.
However, he called on President Barrow to make it plain to the public that he was misinform regarding the NCP’s leadership and retract the proclamation he made at the State House concerning the fact Mr. Samusa being the leader for decades of the NCP political party.
“If this is not done, people will continue speculation on NCP leadership and it will affect the party,” he noted.
