SINCHU ALAGIE DISSATIFIED WITH LACK OF GARGAGE COLLECTION AT DUMPSITE

By Fatoumatta Gassama

The community of Sinchu Alagie has their dissatisfaction about the lack of regular collection of the garbage at the dumpsite.

Kaddy Kassama, a native of Sinchu Alagie was speaking to The Voice in an exclusive interview said the dumpsite is one of the major problem in the community which faced many difficulties in throwing out their garbage.

She added that, she sometimes pays donkey cart riders to throw her garbage for an exorbitant price but many at times even these donkey cart riders will not come because they [donkey cart riders] say that they don’t normally have a placed to throw the garbage and that people cannot live with garbage in side in the compound for a long period of time because it smells. However ‘living in a house where the whole compound is tiled is difficult to leave garbage especially when children are always playing around it’’ said Kaddy.

She cited with places like Banjul and others where garbage men will come with their vehicle and collect their garbage, why it is that Sinchu is not benefiting from that.

She calls on the government to provide dumping-side and vehicles so that garbage men can come and collect their garbage so as for them to live in a healthy environment.

Amadou Bah, also a native of sinchu explained the challenges children faced around these garbage on the roadside. He said that many times especially at night people from nowhere will just come and throw their garbage on the middle of the road where people always pass and associate with others.

He adduces that children go to these garbage and played there with that bad smell which can result to different type of sickness. However, he urged the people who do these act should stop throwing garbage on the middle of the road during night hours or even in the dawn hours of the morning because it’s unhygienic and can lead to air pollution from terrible smells which many people can suffer from contaminated air- borne diseases.

He urged the government authorities especially the National Environmental Agency (NEA) to look at these issues and addressed it.

Ya Mariam Jagne said that for them to have a healthy environment then the surrounding must be clean because bad smells increase mosquitoes which can easily infect the health condition of the people. She added that the authorities NEA should considered the concern and opinion of the people because they are also citizens of the country.

Furthermore, packing garbage in between a fence you share with a neighbour can sometimes result in violence and insults. She said that they are really suffering from these garbage issues.

She calls on the government to take up measures and provides dumping-side for the community. She disclosed.

Wuye Fatty said that the rampant garbage in the community of Sinchu Alagie makes it dull and unhealthy because the garbage is not controlled in the community. The people come and throw their garbage anywhere they like even in the middle of the road.

He added that [I have dig many holes in my compound just to put in my garbage and now many parts of my compound is with holes and which I am afraid that when  rain comes it would become ponds for mosquitoes breeding.]

He calls on the authorities [NEA] to put measures and addressed it so that our immediate surroundings can be cleaned.
