Gambians Demand Consideration on People with mental disorder

Mental disorder has raised concern among a number of people in the country, and this has prompted those working at Westfield car park to call on the government to consider and resolve the conditions of these fellows on the streets.

Speaking to Sulayman Mbye, the chief of Westfield car park, he said that  people who are suffering from mental disorder do wander at the car park daily, adding that “the unstable minded people in that place are seriously neglected in the society as they lack shelter, food and clothes.”

He also added that, “They have no where to eat because every now and then, he sees these people in this environment begging for food, especially from the food vendor at the car park. In fact they don’t have anywhere to spend the night as well and they are always on the streets for both day and night.”

He also expressed his dismay about the conditions of these people suffering from mental disorder, while describing their status as pathetic, wretched and dejected.

Mr. Mbye now called on The Government and Non Governmental Organizations, as well as individuals to come to the aid of the said people.

He has already taken some of them to the Mental Health Hospital of the country known as ‘Tanka-Tanka’ for medication.

Among those spoken to, was also Alhagie Ceesay, a tax driver, who lamented his concern over the issue. He emphasised that “these mentally disordered people deserve proper care like any other person in the country.”

He then said that: “he does not know the causes of frequent madness among the people but he was quick to add that illicit drugs could be counted as the cause of mental illnesses on the public.”

Mr. Ceesay urged the government to come up with mechanism in controlling illicit drugs which he described as raising the number of mentally disordered people in the country.

His feared is that, the mentally disordered people would begin to attack people unexpectedly, adding that they are bothering about their business at times.
