The Gambia Police Force has confirmed that a container reported to be carrying buffalo meat arrived at the Port of Banjul on Thursday, but will not be discharged in The Gambia.
Police said the container is aboard a vessel that arrived at the port on October 8 and, following enquiries with the vessel’s representatives, it is established that the shipment is not destined for The Gambia.
According to the police, the container will therefore remain on board while the vessel is in Banjul.
The confirmation follows reports concerning the presence of the buffalo meat container on the vessel, prompting enquiries into whether the shipment was intended for the Gambian market.
Police said their enquiries established that the container is not meant to be offloaded at the Port of Banjul.
The police further stated that officers are monitoring the situation to ensure the container remains on board throughout the vessel’s stay at the port.
With the container not destined for The Gambia, authorities say it will not be discharged in Banjul.
