The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) has registered three new political parties, bringing the number of registered political parties in The Gambia to 27 ahead of the 5 December 2026 presidential election.
The three parties are the National Democratic Party (NDP), led by Kebba Madi Bojang; the Gambia Labour Party (GLP), headed by Bakusa Dukureh; and the National Builders Party (NBP), led by Ansu Sanneh.
The IEC announced the registrations on Thursday, 17 September, following the parties’ fulfilment of the requirements for registration under Section 106 of the Elections Act, 2025.
IEC Chairman Joseph Colley said the Commission’s decisions on party registration were guided by the Constitution, electoral laws and established procedures.
He said the formation of political parties is provided for under Section 60 of the Constitution, while Section 106 of the Elections Act sets out the requirements for registration.
According to the IEC, the three parties had satisfied the relevant constitutional and legal requirements and were therefore formally registered.
The NBP’s registration was confirmed in an IEC press release signed by Mr Colley on 17 September. The Commission said the party had fulfilled the requirements under Section 106 and was duly registered as a political party.
The registration of the three parties expands the number of political organisations eligible to participate in the country’s electoral process as preparations continue for the December presidential election.
The IEC’s electoral calendar lists 5 December 2026 as the date for the presidential election.
