The Gambia produced a spirited performance against defending champions and nine-time African champions Egypt before losing 3-1 at the CAVB Men’s African Nations Volleyball Championship in Tunis, Tunisia.
The Gambian side made an impressive start, displaying confidence and determination against the experienced Egyptian team and edging a closely contested opening set 28-26.
The result gave The Gambia an early advantage and underlined their ability to compete against one of Africa’s most successful volleyball nations.
Egypt responded strongly in the second set, winning 25-18 before taking control of the third set, which they won 25-15.
The Gambia continued to fight in the fourth set but Egypt held their composure to win 25-22 and secure a 3-1 victory.
Despite the defeat, The Gambia’s performance was encouraging, particularly against a side with nine African titles to its name.
The Gambian team is making only its second appearance at the continental championship, with the sport continuing to develop in the country despite the absence of a modern indoor volleyball facility.
The performance against Egypt provides further evidence of the progress being made by Gambian volleyball as the team gains valuable experience at the continental level.
