The Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG), has arrested a 53-year-old Nigerian national allegedly found in possession of 9,020 suspected ecstasy tablets, suspected cannabis and a machine believed to be linked to the manufacture or processing of illicit drugs.
According to DLEAG, the suspect, identified as Celestine Ikenna Godwin, was arrested on 24 August 2026 at about 7:36 p.m.
The agency said its officers recovered nine packets containing the 9,020 suspected ecstasy tablets, along with two packets and additional quantities of suspected cannabis ruderalis, commonly known as skunk.
A machine suspected to be connected to the manufacture or processing of illicit drugs was also recovered during the operation.
DLEAG described the discovery of the equipment as significant, saying it was the first case of its kind recorded by the agency in The Gambia.
The agency said the discovery raised concerns about the possible establishment of local capacity to produce synthetic drugs and highlighted what it described as the changing nature of the country’s drug-trafficking threat.
DLEAG commended its officers for their vigilance and professionalism during the operation.
The agency said the seizure demonstrated its determination to disrupt not only the movement of illicit drugs into the country but also attempts to establish facilities for their production.
Godwin remains in DLEAG custody as investigations continue. The agency said it would pursue the investigation to identify any individuals or networks that may be connected to the alleged operation.
DLEAG also appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could assist law-enforcement authorities in preventing drug trafficking.
The agency said the operation underscored the need for continued efforts to prevent illicit drugs, particularly synthetic substances, from reaching communities and young people.
