Security authorities have intensified surveillance and patrols in Kombo South as part of efforts to curb illegal sand mining across the Lower West Coast.
According to a statement issued by the Gambia Police Force (GPF) on Tuesday, the Lower West Coast Special Joint Security Operation has intensified coordinated patrols in the area.
The operation involves personnel from the Police General Duty, Police Intervention Unit and the Gambia Armed Forces (GAF).
The GPF said security teams conducted night patrols and established vehicle checkpoints at strategic locations, including Gunjur, Sambuya, Jambanjelly and the Farato-Jambur corridor.
Mobile patrols were also deployed to monitor feeder roads, secondary routes and access points leading to quarry sites.
During the patrols, most trucks observed remained parked, while routes leading to quarry sites showed no signs of recent truck movements, according to the police.
No incidents were recorded during the operations, the GPF said.
The police said enhanced monitoring and coordinated patrols would continue across affected areas amid ongoing public concern over illegal sand mining.
The GPF warned members of the public against engaging in illegal sand mining and urged residents to cooperate with security personnel by reporting suspected violations to the relevant authorities.
The joint operation, according to the police, is aimed at deterring violations and ensuring compliance with the law.
