Two men, Yusupha Camara and Sankung Jatta on Monday appeared before the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court charged with possessing prohibited drugs without lawful authority.
The accused persons appeared before Magistrate Binta Sowe and were charged by the Drug Law Enforcement Agency The Gambia (DLEAG) over possession of prohibited drugs contrary to Section 35(1)(2)(a) of the Drug Control Act 2014, as amended.
According to the charge sheet, Yusupha Camara allegedly possessed 92 grammes of suspected Cannabis Sativa on or about 12 June 2025 at Manjai Kunda in the Kanifing Municipality without a valid license or lawful authority.
The prosecution further alleged that Sankung Jatta was found in possession of 36 grammes of suspected Cannabis Sativa on or about 28 January 2026 at Bakau Beach and other locations within The Gambia.
When the charges were read to them in a language they understood, both accused persons denied the allegations.
“We do not accept the allegations levelled against us,” they told the court.
DLEAG Prosecutor, Inspector I. Jawara applied for an adjournment to allow the prosecution to secure witnesses for the next hearing. He did not object to bail, noting that the offences were bailable.
Magistrate Sowe granted Yusupha Camara bail in the sum of D65,000 with one Gambian surety. The surety is required to provide a valid National Identification Card or SIM verification details, swear to an affidavit of means and guarantee the accused person’s attendance in court.
Sankung Jatta was also granted bail in the sum of D55,000 under similar conditions.
The court warned that the sureties would be held responsible should the accused persons abscond or fail to appear before the court.
The case has been adjourned until 17 August 2026 for the prosecution’s first witness to testify.
