The Women’s Association for Women and Victims’ Empowerment (WAVE) over the weekend organized Human Rights Festival in Panchang village in the Central River Region.
The event brought together victims of alleged torture, abuse and rights violations committed under the Yahya Jammeh Regime.
The festival gathered activists and community members to promote dialogue, dignity, justice and equality through discussions, presentations and cultural performances.
Speaking at the gathering, Papa Ceesay of the “Ndigaal” sect of Kerr Mot Alli village, who were reportedly forced into exile under the former regime due to their religious affiliation, called on the government to facilitate their return to The Gambia.
He claimed that a court ruling had already recognized their right to return, adding that lack of political will from the current administration remained a key obstacle.
“We have equal right to stay in The Gambia, especially after the High Court ruled in our favor,” he said, urging authorities to ensure fair treatment for his community.
Also speaking at the event, the Regional Youth Chairperson for Central River Region North and South, Abdoulie Jawara, called for continued dialogue to address outstanding issues in the region and support the reintegration of victims of rights violations.
He stressed the importance of peaceful coexistence and urged affected communities to express grievances responsibly while engaging authorities constructively.
Jawara further cautioned against the use of force in resolving disputes and encouraged meaningful engagement between stakeholders to promote reconciliation and stability in the region.
