The Unite Movement for Change (UMC) has expressed concern over reports that President Adama Barrow hosted a celebration at State House over the weekend in honour of Arsenal Football Club’s Premier League title victory in England.
In a statement made available to this medium and signed on Monday by Kemo Bojang, Deputy Party Leader for Political and Media Affairs and spokesperson of the UMC, the party said State House is a symbol of national sovereignty and public trust and should not be used for personal or recreational activities.
It said the presidency is funded by Gambian taxpayers and should remain focused on national priorities, particularly at a time when citizens are facing economic hardship.
The UMC noted that while President Barrow is entitled to personal preferences, including his known support for Arsenal, it was inappropriate to use State House resources to celebrate a foreign football club.
The party said the decision reflects misplaced priorities, citing challenges such as unemployment, rising living costs, rural development concerns, and shortages in basic services.
UMC questioned government performance in key areas, including electricity supply, food security, rural development, and public financial accountability, saying citizens continue to face unresolved economic pressures.
The statement accused the administration of focusing on “spectacle over service” and being disconnected from the daily struggles of Gambians.
The movement said a future government under its leadership would prioritise national development, accountability, and the proper use of state institutions.
It added that Gambians will have an opportunity in the December 2026 elections to choose leadership focused on domestic needs and governance reform.
