Leader of the Gambia Democratic Congress (GDC), Mamma Kandeh, has criticized President Adama Barrow, describing him as untrustworthy due to what he called repeated broken campaign promises.
Speaking at a political rally in the North Bank Region on Sunday, Kandeh said leadership was judged by actions and words, arguing that President Barrow has failed to demonstrate these qualities.
He recalled Barrow’s 2016 campaign promise of a three-year transition, noting that the president later insisted he would serve a full constitutional term of five years and would not step down. He also referenced subsequent remarks attributed to Barrow suggesting he could seek a ten-year mandate, saying this reflected inconsistency in political commitments.
Kandeh says such conduct shows that the president cannot be trusted and urged citizens to avoid what he described as deceptive political practices.
He also accused the incumbent of using material incentives during election periods, including the distribution of items such as cooking utensils and football jerseys, which he said should not influence voters’ choices.
According to him, national priorities such as education, healthcare, agriculture, and improved living standards should take precedence over short-term electoral inducements.
The GDC leader urged citizens to take responsibility for political change through the ballot, saying the country’s current challenges require new leadership.
He further called on voters to remain vigilant ahead of the presidential election and warned against the participation of non-citizens in the electoral process, saying this could undermine credible outcomes.
Kandeh said Gambians must be allowed to freely decide their leadership and determine their country’s future through democratic means.
