Gambia Police Force (GPF) has expressed commitment in strengthening community relations and promoting peaceful coexistence with members of the Nigerian community in The Gambia.
According to a police statement, officers from the Community Policing Unit and the Public Relations and Press Unit participated in the Congress of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) – The Gambia Chapter, held in May at the Nigerian High Commission in Bakau.
The engagement provided a platform for discussions on public safety, community cooperation and compliance with the laws of The Gambia.
Speaking on behalf of the GPF, Inspector Alieu Gaye said the Police remained committed to fostering strong community relations and encouraging peaceful coexistence among all residents.
He underscored the importance of unity in diversity, public awareness and sustained cooperation between the Police and the Nigerian community in maintaining peace and security.
Inspector Gaye also commended the leadership of NIDO Gambia, headed by Dr. Great Akah Ottuduoma, for organizing the program, which he said promoted adherence to the law, peaceful coexistence and positive community engagement.
He urged members of the Nigerian community to respect the laws of The Gambia, regularize their immigration status and documentation, and engage only in lawful economic activities.
The police officer further highlighted the importance of community policing, noting that safety and security require trust, information sharing and collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the public.
According to the statement, the participation of the GPF in the congress was facilitated through the approval and support of the Inspector General of Police and the Force’s senior management.
The police say the engagement forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen partnerships with communities across the country in support of peace, security and national development.
