A violent altercation at the University of The Gambia (UTG) Kanifing Campus on Wednesday left at least three students injured during the students’ union annual congress.
The congress held on 13th May 2026, was convened to allow students to review the performance of their leadership and assess reports presented by the students’ union executive.
According to eyewitness accounts, the incident stemmed from disagreements between rival student political groups over delays in the presentation of a financial report by the outgoing executive.
The disagreement reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation during the proceedings, resulting in injuries to three students, including the newly elected students’ union president, Ismaila Fadera, who sustained injuries to his jaw.
Security personnel from the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) were deployed to the campus to restore order. Representatives of the involved groups were later invited to the Kairaba Police Post for questioning, before being released after discussions with security officials.
The injured students were taken to Kanifing General Hospital for medical attention.
The incident has raised concerns about growing political tensions within student governance structures at the university and calls for stronger institutional measures to maintain order during student elections and congresses.
