A parliamentary committee on government projects has expressed satisfaction with the progress of road construction projects in the country.

The National Assembly’s Select Committee on Monitoring the Implementation of Government Projects says it is impressed with the progress and quality of ongoing government-funded road construction works across the country.

The committee made the remarks following a week-long nationwide inspection tour of government intervention projects, with particular focus on road infrastructure developments being implemented by the government.

Mandated by the National Assembly to conduct quarterly inspections of approved government-funded projects, the committee said the exercise was aimed at assessing implementation, including adherence to technical specifications, timelines and budget allocations.

Speaking after visiting several project sites, the Chairperson of the Select Committee, Hon. Yaya Menteng Sanyang, commended the scale and quality of road works currently underway nationwide.

“We are very impressed. I have to be very honest, as an opposition MP, the government is doing very well in terms of road infrastructure interventions. Road construction is expensive, yet there are roads being built all over this country,” Hon. Sanyang, National Assembly Member for Latrikunda Sabiji Constituency, remarked.

He noted that the projects would improve connectivity between communities, stimulate economic growth and enhance trade opportunities across the country.

Hon. Sanyang further explains that part of the committee’s oversight responsibility is to ensure that funds approved by the National Assembly are used for their intended purposes.

“As National Assembly members, we approve budgets and allocate resources for government projects. It is our responsibility to go on the ground and ascertain whether those funds have been spent according to what was approved,” he said.

He adds that the committee’s key focus during such inspections includes project specifications, timelines and budget compliance, describing these as critical indicators of effective implementation.

The National Assembly Select Committee was accompanied during the inspection tour by a technical team from the National Roads Authority (NRA), led by its Technical Director, George Jatta.
